On 28th February 2021, emissions requirements for non-road mobile machinery in London were once again updated to ensure that air pollution continues to be tackled.
Non-Road mobile machinery (NRMM) refers to any mobile machines and industrial equipment/vehicles fitted with an internal combustion engine – these machines are not used for transporting goods or passengers. NRMM (particularly those used in the construction sector) is considered a significant contributor to air pollution within London.
The update applies to any mobile machinery (mainly used on construction sites and developments). This means that major development sites within Greater London have to use stage IIIA machines, and within Central London and Canary Wharf, stage IIIB machines are to be used.
Stage III standards have been split into two further sections – A and B. The emissions and ammonia limits placed on these standards apply to all non-road diesel engines used on construction sites throughout London, with a power rating of between 37kW and 560 kW.
Stage IIIA Machines – standard emissions limits for all NRMM dependent on the kW of the vehicle.
Stage IIIB Machines – a PM limit of 0.025 g/kWh, forcing the use of diesel particulate filters or in-cylinder technology has been placed on these vehicles alongside the standard emissions limit.
